Whitening lifts the staining that builds up over time from coffee, tea and smoking. It works on natural tooth structure — fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour, which has to be accounted for in the plan before starting.
An examination comes first. If there is decay or gum inflammation, that is treated before any whitening: whitening over an existing problem increases sensitivity and gives a poor result.
Some sensitivity afterwards is normal and settles within a day or two. How long the result lasts depends more on daily habits than on the treatment itself.
The first 48 hours matter most: teeth take up staining more readily just after a session, so cutting back on coffee, tea, red wine and dark sauces during that window is worth doing. It affects the result more than most people expect.
